An excavation in the palm of your hand.

The Keeladi Museum app brings the artefacts of the Keeladi excavation into an interactive digital space, through 3D visualisation and augmented reality.

Visitors can explore the artefacts up close, follow a guide to the museum, and step into the excavation itself, with content managed and updated from the backend.

300 artefacts, captured in 3D.

We captured 300 artefacts from the excavation with 3D photogrammetry. Each one was photographed all the way round, rebuilt as a 3D model, then cleaned up and textured so it holds up close to the camera.

Every artefact, up close and in AR.

The gallery groups artefacts into collections such as Ceramic Industry, Lifestyle and Textile Industry. Each artefact has its story, a 3D view and a View in AR button that places it in the room, life-size, to move, rotate and zoom.

Audio narration in English and Tamil makes every artefact accessible to more visitors.

Step into the dig.

Beyond the artefacts, visitors can explore the excavation itself in AR. Scan the ground and the trench opens up in front of you, with its pottery and burial urn in place.

Built to keep the museum's content fresh.

Unity 3D powers the interactive visualisation layer. Backend services in Node.js and MongoDB manage artefact information, metadata and visitor interactions.

A cloud architecture on AWS provides the APIs and database services that deliver content to the app.

Launched by the Chief Minister.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the Keeladi Museum AR app in April 2023, alongside the start of the ninth phase of excavation at Keeladi. The launch was covered across Tamil news and official channels.

Launched by the Chief Minister.

How we optimised it.

  1. 01

300 artefacts captured with 3D photogrammetry and brought into the app and AR.

  2. 02

Artefact information managed dynamically from the backend, so content stays up to date.

  3. 03

Audio in English and Tamil makes it accessible to more visitors.

What it achieved

Launched by the Chief Minister, with 10,000+ downloads and a 4.9 rating on Google Play.

Every layer, one team.

We developed the full-stack application and integrated the AR/3D experience with backend services and cloud infrastructure.

We also captured the 300 artefacts with 3D photogrammetry and produced the AR excavation experience.
